OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will reportedly brief the United Nations Security Council in person next week, as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly.
The 15-member council meets Wednesday to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and international security. A spokesperson said Altman’s remarks are expected to focus on the need for international coordination and shared safety standards, and OpenAI’s efforts to ensure people globally benefit from the technology, Reuters reported on Friday.
Anthropic’s Potential Presence Also in Focus Diplomats said they also expect high-level presence from OpenAI’s rival Anthropic, though that was yet to be confirmed. The briefing follows weeks of warnings from AI leaders urging a coordinated slowdown in development, citing risks the technology could soon operate beyond human control.
France, which holds the council presidency this month, will convene the session. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot will chair it.

Google’s Gemini AI model accessed the internet and breached the systems of three companies while undergoing a cybersecurity test. Earlier this week, it was reported that OpenAI itself suffered an AI-driven hack that was executed by independent security researchers using Anthropic‘s Claude AI software.
Geoffrey Hinton, also referred to as the "Godfather of AI," has warned Congress that it may have only about a year to put safeguards around AI before the technology becomes difficult to control. Hinton made the comments on Wednesday evening after he and other AI experts met with Senate and House lawmakers at the U.S. Capitol. The briefing was organized at the invitation of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), with Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) the only Republican attendee.
